為紀念成立20週年，視覺效果協會（Visual Effects Society, VES）針對所屬會員，票選出影史70部最具影力的視覺特效（VFX）電影，導演詹姆斯柯麥隆（James Cameron）拔得頭籌，共有《無底洞》、《異形2》、《阿凡達》、《魔鬼終結者》、《魔鬼終結者2》、《鐵達尼號》6部作品入選，史蒂芬史匹柏（Steven Spielberg）以《第三類接觸》、《E.T.外星人》、《大白鯊》、《法櫃奇兵》、《侏羅紀公園》5部作品緊追其後，彼得傑克森（Peter Jackson）則有《魔戒》三部曲與《金剛》4部電影獲選。
總部設在洛杉磯的視覺效果協會是一個全球性的職業榮譽組織，組成份子都是視覺效果業界相關的從業人員，目前擁有全球30幾個國家大約3,400位會員，並在澳洲、舊金山灣區、德國、倫敦、蒙特婁、紐約、紐西蘭、多倫多、溫哥華、華盛頓等地區或城市都設有分部。這個協會也曾於2007年舉辦過類似活動，票選出50部最有影響力的視覺特效電影。
70部入選的作品當中，年代橫跨1900年代到2015年，其中最久遠的作品是1902年的法國默片《月球之旅》，2015年則有2部電影獲選，包括《人造意識》以及《瘋狂麥斯：憤怒道》。
視覺效果協會會員於今年夏天進行票選活動，作品資格限定在2015年之前。因為票選結果有作品票數相同，因此實際名單上共有72部電影獲選。
